Each house sign is made from 500 million year old Welsh slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog with high-quality sign writers enamel paint and metal hidden fixings. Did you know that Welsh slate was quarried from North Wales from as early as the 12th century? It’s actually the toughest slate known to man. It has very few impurities and a beautiful colour and grain structure. Welsh slate doesn’t fade in the sun. Here at Valley Mill we use Welsh Blue Grey Slate, although it is in fact a dark grey in appearance. The slate that we use here in our workshop in South Wales is mined at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The benefits of Welsh slate really surpass its cousins. There are not only fewer impurities in 100% Welsh slate but, it also needs less maintenance. Welsh slate has less fade and is stronger than other slates. We source our slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog which means delivery is much more eco-friendly than slates that have been imported from outside the UK. E.G. China and Spain. Supporting us also means you are supporting the local economy.
Valley Mill has been manufacturing and selling Welsh slate gifts and home wares since 2007. From designing laser engraved Welsh slate gifts in his spare room, Kevin Thomas has been designing and expanding his range of handmade products for over 10 years, which includes candles, natural soaps, blankets, cushions, mugs, coasters, trays, cheese boards, placemats, jewellery. Valley Mill also handcraft Welsh slate house signs, wedding signage and favours, trophies and memorials.
Hidden fixing instructions will be included with your house sign. If the slate becomes marked or faded, wipe a small amount of boiled linseed oil (or any food-safe oil) over the slate with a soft sponge to bring it back to life. Avoid contact with oil to paint as this could cause discolouration to paint.
