The History of St Valentine’s Day

St Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on the 14th February. It’s a day when we show our love to the special people in our lives. But who was Saint Valentine?

Believed to be a priest in Rome in the 3rd century, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death by Emperor Claudius. The Emperor has banned marriage because he believed that married men did not make good soldiers. Valentine believed in love and arranged for people to be married in secret. 

Whilst in jail, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. Valentine was put to death on the 14th of February. It is told that he wrote a letter for her signed ‘from your Valentine’. 

All of Slate Houses St Valentine’s Day designs for this year have been inspired by love, with our own modern twist.
