Behind the Scenes at Valley Mill- September

Hydrogarden Weston Beach Race Trophy

As always we’ve had another busy month working away behind the scenes on some exciting bespoke projects. This month’s main project comes from RHL Activities, organisers of the the UK’s largest motor sport event- the HydroGarden Weston Beach Race Powered by KTM.

As with previous years we were contacted in September by RHL Activities to design and create a total of 41 trophies for all races across the HydroGarden Weston Beach Race Powered by KTM event, being held from 19th-21st October.

The Brief

As usual the design brief started with “We want something big and heavy”, which is great unless you’re one of the winners! In previous years some winners have struggled to lift the near 40kg monoliths we’ve created for the event.

However, this year, RHL wanted something a little bit more special; which is something that we love to hear from our customers.

They still wanted ‘big and heavy’ for the 9 main awards, which would be crafted out of 80mm thick Welsh slate on a riven slate base. However, they wanted something sleeker and more geometric for the majority of the awards in varying sizes, depending on the race and position. This year’s brief gave us a chance to play with our new 3D design software, which we used to create the 100mm square Welsh slate pillars in various heights.

Once the were design was signed off we then got to work on actually producing the trophies.

The Process

After creating the vector designs of the motifs we can then apply the sandblast film to the slate ready to be laser cut. The required designs are laser cut onto the film, and the sections to be deep engraved are picked out.

We then place the trophy into the sandblast cabinet and sandblast the exposed areas, which engraves into the slate.

We can then hand paint through the film into the engraved area. Once dry we remove the film, sand over the engraved area and oil.

The End Result

And here are trophies in all their glory, including some brilliant photos of just a few lucky winners.
